This advert appeared in 1964 in Showtime magazine, which was a short-lived monthly film magazine published by Rank in the 1960s, which could only be purchased at Rank cinemas or by subscription. It tells us that Chandy is the “modern drink for modern people” that’s “available from pubs, clubs, bingo halls, bowling lanes and cinemas”. Alas they didn’t have it at our local bowling alley the last time we went there! We have an original copy of this advert.

The text in full reads:

Chandy

Chandy is the Showtime Drink. Delicious, thirst quenching, Chandy, the modern drink for modern people.

Available from pubs, clubs, Bingo Halls, Bowling Lanes and Cinemas.

Wherever and whenever you drink, drink Chandy, the finest thirst quencher.

The man at the helm - Nick Alexander

the name behind the event - Chandy

Chandy is closely associated with International Moth Class Racing in Britain, supporting top events. In 1965, for example, Chandy sponsored the immensely successful European Moth Class Championship at Dover (which included the Winston Churchill Trophy), as well as the Easter Series at Lymington. Chandy will continue their sponsorship of International Moth Class Racing in the future – a fact that will please everyone concerned with the sport. Chandy is not known for its sponsorship alone – its cool, refreshing taste makes it a favourite thirst-quencher with competitors and spectators alike, too!

Chandy THE FAMILY-DRINK ALL THE FAMILY DRINK

This advert appeared in the British Association for International Moth Racing Yearbook 1965-66, but we suspect it was originally used elsewhere. It celebrates Chandy’s sponsorship of ski-ing and “many other sports”. We don’t have an original copy of this advert (yet).

The text reads:

Chandy CHAMPIONS

Make way for thirsty customers! It’s CHANDY they ask for. Served straight. No bother. Straight from the bottle, straight from the can. CHANDY gets more popular every day.

CHANDY is actively supporting sailing, ski-ing and many other sports. But most of all CHANDY quenches your thirst, so, wherever you drink, drink ....

Title

Chandy print adverts - 1960s

In the 1960s the Chandy advertising budget doesn’t appear to have extended to reaching particularly mainstream titles. Instead, we know about adverts that appeared in such obscure publications as Sport Parachutist, Showtime magazine and the British Association for International Moth Racing Yearbook.

The five adverts on this page are all the 1960s Chandy print adverts we know about and where they appeared. Some of these we have in original form, some only in reproduction or pdf form. Click to enlarge any of the advert images.

This advert appeared in every issue from 1964 until mid-1967 of Sport Parachutist, the Journal of the British Parachute Association, and celebrates Chandy’s sponsorship of the Scottish Parachute Championships. We have an original copy of this advert.

The text reads:

Chandy CHAMPIONS

The Chandy Trophy is awarded for the Scottish Open and National Parachute Championships

Blue sky, hot blazing sunshine, small white "umbrellas" growing bigger, gently cascading and floating to the Dropping Zone.

Jostling, bumping, thirsty, Parachutists and Spectators - thirsty, really thirsty, edging and elbowing to the bar to drink Chandy.

Now edging and elbowing out from the bar - later to drop in again.

This advert appeared in the programmes for the 26th June 1966 and 25th June 1967 Harewood Hill Climb motor racing events at Harewood, Leeds and focuses on Chandy being a “safe” drink for drivers. We have an original copy of this advert.

The text reads:

one ...   for the road!

Refreshing clean-tasting Chandy is the ideal drink for thirsty motorists. Chandy keeps you fit for the road. And it’s fun to drink. A real thirst-quencher. In fact, you could say that Chandy is a driver’s best friend!

Chandy – the drink for thirsty drivers!

This advert appeared in the British Association for International Moth Racing Yearbook 1966-67, where alas we found out that moth racing is to do with a class of sailing and nothing to do with racing winged insects after all (which moths, we suppose would be quite hard to train). We don’t have an original copy of this advert (yet).
